Time to treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator and outcome of stroke in clinical practice: retrospective analysis of hospital quality assurance data with comparison with results from randomised clinical trials.

The number needed to treat to achieve an improved outcome as judged by the Modified Rankin Scale (http://bit.ly/SoMPsO) ranged from 4.5 if given within first 1.5 hours after stroke onset; up to 18.0 if given up to 4.5 hours after stroke onset. The mortality did not vary up to 4.5 hours.
